Status: Emirate. Dubai is the name given to both the city and the emirate. It is the second largest of the seven emirates in the UAE.

Area: 3,885 sq. km. Dubai

Location: 25°16'N 55°20'E. Dubai is located on the north-eastern part of UAE, stretches over 115 km on the Gulf Coast and towards the east to some 120 km as far as Hatta, an ancient village.

Government Head: H. H. Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, and the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.

Population: 1.422 million in 2006 as per Dubai Statistics Department. Majority live in Dubai city and its suburbs have a cosmopolitan population. A small percentage lives in villages and agrarian communities.

Currency: The United Arab Emirates currency is called the Dirham. Arab Emirate Dirham (=Dhs or AED) 100 Fils = 1 Dirhams

Languages: Arabic, though English is widely used in business and trade sectors. Other commonly used languages are Hindi, Urdu, and Farsi.

Religion: The official religion of the United Arab Emirates is Islam. But other faiths are accepted and freedom of worship privately is given. Churches are common in some emirates and in Dubai you will even find a Hindu Temple.

Weather: Sunny for most of the year. A sub-tropical arid climate with temperatures ranging from a high of 43°C to a low of 10.5° C. Humidity is high during summer. A brief monsoon spells in the winter months of January and February, although high velocity winds breakout occasionally at other times. Early November to March experiences a very pleasant climate.
